Microplastics Are Everywhere — Here’s How to Cut Your Exposure

Synthetic carpets, furniture, clothing, and household dust all shed microplastic fibers into the air you breathe indoors — and indoor air is often more contaminated with these particles than outdoor air, simply because it’s enclosed.

5. Switch to Stainless Steel or Cast Iron Cookware

Many nonstick pans rely on plastic-based or polymer coatings that degrade with scratching, high heat, and time — shedding particles directly into the food you’re cooking. Even when a coating looks intact, micro-abrasions from metal utensils or dishwasher cycles can be releasing particles you simply can’t see.

The swap: Stainless steel and cast iron are durable, don’t rely on a coating that can wear away, and as a bonus, cast iron can even add a small, beneficial amount of dietary iron to your food.


6. Use Wooden Cutting Boards Instead of Plastic

Every time a knife runs across a plastic cutting board, it shaves off microscopic plastic particles — and those particles end up directly on the food you’re about to eat. Studies have shown that the simple act of chopping vegetables on a plastic board can transfer thousands of microplastic particles into food in a single session.

The swap: A wooden or bamboo cutting board doesn’t shed plastic, and many wood types have natural antimicrobial properties as an added bonus. Just be sure to oil it occasionally to keep it from drying out and cracking.


A Reasonable Way to Think About All This

None of these changes will get you to zero exposure — microplastics are essentially impossible to avoid entirely in modern life.
